rifle season ...

well opening day of rifle season. all the prep. plotting and spotting. and a hilarious opening day. for some anyway.
i went and bought some sent blocker. skin safe all natural. i got the three pack laundry soap body wash and spray. my wife washed our hunting clothes and i took a nice bath with the body wash. i was not going to be sniffed out this year.
i normally use my 12 gauge with slugs but i had just got a new scope for my 308 and the deer i have been seeing have been about 60 yards away so i decided to use the 308 for opening day.
i got up at 4:00 and got everything ready. packed some snacks and couple of sodas to drink in my carry bag. which still had the stuff in it for bow hunting.
i was in a hurry so i left it all in the bag.
i got to the place i wanted to hunt. a nice cedar glade surrounded by oak trees.
picked out a small cedar to sit by with a good all around view.
i sit for about a hour and nothing. so i ate a pop tart and drank a soda. nothing going on so i rubbed my back on the cedar , i had a serious itch.
i sat for another two hours and was pretty bored with everything and was thinking i should move and the itchy spot on my back was making crazy. but i decided to sit for another hour. about 10 minutes had passed and i heard some squirls barking over on the hill in the timber on the neighbors property. i thought to my self maybe something is coming.
i sat about 20 minutes and nothing. so i decided to eat something. i was digging in my bag. which had my rattling horns. the grunt call i didn't like the odor spray a
bottle of advil, 2 sodas and 2 more pop tarts and extra shells. and some peppermints.
needless to say it sounded like i was building a house or something, i finally got a little agitated  grabbed the carry bag and just dumped it on the ground grabbed the pop tart i was trying to get opened it and took a big bite. all while i was trying to scratch my back. looked over and seen a cedar that had some off looking dead limbs. i thought to my self that can't be right so i was looking it over a little better.
and then a buck just stepped out looking at me like i was a idiot. and i was one.
he trotted off. i grabbed my rifle off the ground and the grunt call and gave it a blow. don't know why but that is what i did. anyway he came back and stood there staring at me. i looked him over in my scope.he had one horn with 4 nice points on it and the other was deformed. i remember thinking it was the deer off that kids movie (open season). i thought about it for a minute and i decided bow season sucked and i all ways get a deer opening day, so i was going to take the shot.
he was about 25 yards away perfect chest shot. i pulled the trigger and there was this nice loud snap. i remember thinking. that's right don't load your dang rifle.
he was still standing there looking right at me. so i slowly got hold of the bolt and loaded and cocked my rifle. and a bullet had came out of the chamber. and i was thinking a dud bullet then he took step and stopped. i again pulled the trigger. and again it made the same loud snap. i thought well shit and reloaded it again and he again took a couple of steps. five times we done this. till my clip was empty.
he was still there looking at me. i layed my rifle down looked at him and said. don't suppose you will let me go get my other gun. he snorted and just walked off. so i took it as a no. the further away he got the faster he went. i have not seen him since. i went to my truck and got my 12 gauge. i examined my 308 shells and the firing  pin never struck the primer. that deer must be protected. later in the season i reloaded the 308 and it shot all five shots just fine.
i hunted till dark never seen anything else opening day but i sure did a lot of itching. i got home later pulled off my hunting clothes and seen i was broke out  everywhere my cloths touched me.
i ended up with this rash for the whole season. the only relief i got was taking benadryl.
i got a nice doe the second day. so i filled my antler less tag. but not my any deer tag..  well its is still bow season and black powder is coming up so i can still get a nick buck.   my wife did not get a deer this year her sister got a button buck.
well as always happy hunting and be safe.

grunt call

i had never used one of the until yesterday and never will again.
i bought one and watched probably a hundred you tube videos  i practiced and practiced and felt confident i was going to get the big one.. well  i blew the thing and i heard deer running away.. for 10 minutes over the hill and thru the woods to somebody else's farm they go.
but if nothing else i know they were there. but i'm not impressed with the grunt call i used.
i heard some buck grunting after wards and they did not sound anything like the cal i used
they sounded more like a goat but a little deeper tone.
well happy hunting and i will put all my rifle season on one post in a couple of days

going hunting

well i get to go in the morning. but i need to do
something different and get a deer.people are starting
to think i am sleeping and resting. hiding out.
so i got to get one of those deer i been seeing
or i am going to have some explaining to do.......
after all i only feel asleep once this year.
that reminds me of something that happened years ago
back in 1980 i think. my step and one of his friends
had been out partying the night before opening day
my step father friend drove at truck and was on the
road a lot so he did get a lot of sleep.
anyway the show up opening morning sleepy and still
buzzing from being out drinking all night and wanted me to
drive them to the deer woods while they took a nap.
it was a two hour drive and a ride to the woods for me
so i grabbed my bow and was all for it. we got there about six a.m.
and rushed to our tree stands. and stayed in them for about 4 hours or so
and went back to the car and waited for the others like we always
had my step dad and i waited till about 11:00 a.m. and decided
his truck driving friend was sleeping so we went to get
him when we found him he was laying on the ground
moaning in pain. he had fell asleep and fell out of his stand.
he had broken his back. we were mile from any help
and he was already going into shock
so we made a stecher and carefully got him on it and
carried him to the car. we put him in the back seat stretcher
and all and had to drive out with the 2 back car doors open.
we went to the first farm house and call for an ambulance.
years of therapy and he can walk with leg braces and a cane.
he don' bow hunt anymore and i myself quit for several years.
so be safe when hunting and its best not to hunt with a hangover and tiered
happy hunting good luck and be safe.

no hunting

i have to stop hunting for a day or so
i take care of my grandmother. so i need to do that for now
i don't want to not be where i am needed
but yesterday and the day before was pretty much.dead anyway
and youth rifle season is open here now. so the deer in in the heavy brush
and i want to save my granny sitter for rifle season.
i normally fill my tag the first day. and i have never shot one more than 40 yards away
that why i don't understand why i can't.get a nice buck during bow season.
i guess i just as focused with granny but i will have my deer lol
have a nice day everyone and happy hunting

dang it anyway

well been a ..shall i say interesting few days. went back to
my stand where i seen the big buck i was there about an
hour and out came a doe and right behind her was the
buck i had shot at the day before they ran all around up
and down the field in and out of the woods probably for
a hour. then the doe vanished into the woods and the
buck just watched her run off guess he got tired of chasing her.
then he walked up to about 60 yard of my stant and just
stood there looking my way for about 15 minutes then
he turned away and walked off into the brush. guess he
 knew i was there somewhere.
but it gets better. got down and went home for lunch
relaxed for a hour or two and got my wife to go with me .
we sat in the blind for four hours and nothing. it was
sundown and i was getting a migraine headache.
my wife said she had some ibuprofen in her backpack
so lay my bow down get down on my hand and knees
and dig thru the back pack and dig out the bottle of pills .
rattling around made all kind of noise. swallowed them
and my wife is tapping me on the back saying deer deer.
i turn my head just in time to see it run away.
so  have to wonder if there is a chance i might possibly
be the worst bow hunter in missouri. but i won't quit
i always get one in rifle season. and the only thing different
is the use of a compound bow.
i went this morning but did not see a thing .
i don't even think i saw a bird
so i did not hunt this evening but i will be there at daybreak
 in the morning
good luck and happy hunting everyone
